Death of Reverend Narciso C. Dumalagan

By Rev. Horst Ostermann

I received the news from my friend Rev. Esther Gelloagan that Rev. Narciso C. Dumalagan died at Philippine Heart Center in Manila on March 4, 2012. I wrote this little note in order to honor a great person, a great pastor and wonderful Filipino CPE Supervisor.

“He was a CPE Supervisor fully accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) in the United States. His American CPE Supervisor, who introduced him to CPE, was the Rev. Albert Dalton. He spoke of him often and with deeply felt gratitude.
Narciso not only founded the Pastoral Care Foundation in the Philippines (PCF) – now Clinical Pastoral Education and Care Foundation (CPECF) but he also founded together with his wife  a nursery for small children: The Garden of Life and an Elementary School and a High School in a low income settlement in Manila.

I met Reverend Narciso C. Dumalagan when I came to the Philippines in 2001 in order to help UCCP to revive their CPE training program. He introduced me to the PCF and helped me to become a member of  PCF. He taught me modesty and persistence.

When I asked him how he managed to cope with the many obstacles which he day by day had to overcome in trying to keep his CPE trainings, his nursery and his schools alive, his answer was: ‘I do not take more on my shoulders than I can bear and I enjoy life!’

A great person, a great follower of Jesus Christ and a great pastor left this world – called to return to his heavenly father and to those he loved and who had left this world before him.”
